I have been withholding my blog posts until now, so you are going to notice that there are a lot of them from today now.. You may want to not read all of them at once, but if you do, more power to you.
On the second day of Rome our very first event was to tour the National Museums of Rome. We didn't realize at the time that there are a ton of them, and only went into one. It was very nice though. A few pictures to show the experience thoroughly.
Inside the baths from Ancient Rome, the building is around more than 1500 years old. They are in the process of restoring the baths and making them to be accessible to the public again.
They didn't allow pictures inside the museum, so I'll tell you a bit about it's contents. They had a ridiculous amount of unimportant sculptures that no one really cared about and unused fountain foundations in the garden area and a bit inside. Upstairs though, they had ancient tablets with writing on them that have been preserved with the translations provided as well.
Lots of old vases, plates, and burial things were also included.
The thing that struck me most was a collar, that looked like it might be for a dog, that was put on someone's slave. It said, just as an animals would, "If escaped please return to...." I found that quite horrible, but an accurate representation of the time then nonetheless.
There was an interactive section to the museum where you could watch little videos about certain important pieces. That was simply fascinating because it really put the incredibleness of what you were looking at into perspective.
Here is one of my typical flower pictures..
The next place we went was the Borghese Gallery.
I adore the Borghese! I had never enjoyed an art museum so much. It was all small rooms filled with paintings and sculptures. They made fantastic use of the space though, the ceilings had paintings on them! My favorite sculpture is there, "Daphne and Apollo", by Bartelloni. His sculptures are all incredible though, and many of them were there.
This is the outside, and sadly, my only picture. They don't even allow bags to go into the museum, much less let you take pictures. If you haven't gotten the idea, this was my favorite museum we saw.
The museum has huge gardens around it, and in the gardens you can rent bikes and other small vehicles. We rented a odd little two person bike carriage and had a fabulous time.
Finally, we went to the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier.
Then Mum got the fantastic idea to climb up something else. Yay.
Here is Mum taking a picture.
Alright, that will be all of Rome Day 2!If you're not tired yet, look forward to Days 3&4 and shortly after: Venice!
Ciao!
